Sea-Salt sprayed hair. The glorious look of it. A week at the shore. Lounging around, tousled, loose waves. We’d all love to bring this look home. And we can.
There are so many products on the market today that we can buy to imitate the look successfully. And empty our wallets each month as we do.
Or, we can duplicate those products with ingredients that we probably have right now in our own kitchens and bathrooms at a fraction of the cost and still look as good and nurture our hair better than some of those products do. How? Follow my recipe and find out.
I began my journey of beach worthy curls with a purchase of Josie Maran’s Bohemian Waves Argan Hair Mist at a cost of $22.00 for 112ml/3.8 fl. oz. Did it work? Absolutely! Did I love the way it made my hair feel? Yes I did. On a pretty much daily basis, the bottle lasted me one month. Considering the cost of all the other products I use for my hair and the cost for my fabulous salon stylist Amy, I began to wonder if I could cut the cost of that $22.00.
I did. I cut it way down to just about a dollar for 8 oz. of home-made Sea-Salt spray. I took many recipes culled from the internet and refined them for my own hair. I played with them week by week. I added and subtracted until I was happy with the final results.
With this recipe, my hair doesn’t feel brittle. It doesn’t feel hard. It feels soft, yet a bit crunchy. It’s manageable. It has volume and waves. It even has curls. It texturizes. It’s full. My normal hair, without any product, is fine, but thick and straighter than straight can be. But the best part? This recipe doesn’t dry out your hair. Which seems to be a major complaint of other sea-salt sprays. Even after using my sea-salt spray daily, my hair is still soft and manageable. Here’s my final recipe:

What you’ll need:
large plastic container with lid
plastic spoon
funnel
measuring spoons
final container with sprayer to put product in, 4 to 8 oz. in size
Hot Water
Epsom Salt
Sea Salt
Coconut Oil
Argan Oil
Lemon juice-if you want to add blonde highlights to your hair
Aloe Vera Gel
Root Volumizing Root Lifter-the liquid kind, not the mousse

Begin by measuring one cup or 8 oz. of very hot water into the plastic container. The water needs to be hot to melt the other ingredients together. Add 1 tablespoon of Sea Salt and mix well. Add 2 tablespoons of Epsom salt and mix well. Add 1 teaspoon of coconut oil and stir until melted. Add 1 teaspoon of Argan Oil and mix well. Add 1 teaspoon of Aloe Vera gel and mix well. Add 1 teaspoon of Lemon Juice and mix well. Add 1 teaspoon of Root Volumizer with Root Lifter and mix well. Once all these ingredients are in the container, close it, and shake well for about a minute to ensure the ingredients are well-blended.
I use a see-thru sprayer so I can visualize how much is in the bottle and also, if there is any residue on the bottom of the bottle. Use the funnel to pour the mixture into the sprayer. Shake well before each use.

My Sea Urchin Spray is best used on lightly damp hair. I’ve used it on day-old hair that already has the mixture in it to refresh it. Rather than comb it through, scrunch your hair into piles and begin to blow-dry on a lower setting. You can use a diffuser if you have one handy. If not, then hold the dryer back at a distance. Keep circulating the dryer around your upside down head, scrunching your hair with your hand, until dry.

Holding your head up once your hair is dry, moisten your palms with just some drops of either Argan Oil, a natural hair oil that you have handy such as Apricot Oil, Cocunut Oil, Grapeseed Oil, etc., or use a prepared oil that you own from the store. Continue scrunching your hair to tame any frizziness and give it some shine. This will also give some spring to more curls and waves.

That’s normally straight hair in the photo above sprayed with my recipe. I love that hair doesn’t dry out with it, either. I don’t put any fragrance into my sea-salt spray, because I wear my own perfume and there’s no need for a conflict. It has a nice gentle fragrance that’s very mild, anyway. This will cost you pennies to make. There are many varieties of Argan Oil on the market, and the choice to use is yours. Always be careful when using hot water, and test the product on a patch of skin first if you think you might have any allergies. It’s intended for your scalp and hair, only.
